5 Things to Look for When Sending Cookies as a Gift

Sending someone cookies sounds fairly foolproof.

Then you start looking.

Do you send six or twelve? Do you choose all chocolate because it feels safe? Will they still taste good after travelling? What if you have no idea what flavours they like?

We send a lot of Happy Crumb boxes as gifts, and most of the decisions come down to the same few things.

Here is what I would look at before ordering.

1. Pick cookies that will still be good when they arrive

This matters more than people realise.

A cookie can taste incredible ten minutes out of the oven and be fairly disappointing two days later.

If you are sending cookies through the post, you want something that has been baked with delivery in mind.

Our cookies are thick and soft-centred, which helps them retain moisture while they travel. They are very different from thin, crisp biscuits that can become dry quite quickly once opened.

We bake in small batches, package the cookies once they are ready and send them across the UK.

If you are comparing bakeries, I would check how long the cookies are expected to stay fresh and whether the bakery actually talks about how they should be stored once they arrive.

That tells you quite a lot.

2. If you do not know their favourite flavour, send a mix

This is probably the question we get most often.

If you know someone loves a particular flavour, easy. Send that.

If you do not know, a mixed box is usually the better option.

Chocolate flavours are naturally the safest place to start, then I would add one or two flavours that feel a little different.

At Happy Crumb that might mean Classic Chocolate alongside something seasonal or inspired by a British dessert.

We have made flavours including Cherry Bakewell, Apple Crumble and Sticky Toffee, and part of the fun of a mixed box is trying something you would not necessarily have picked for yourself.

A box of six gives you enough room for variety without turning the gift into a major event.

For families or people who are likely to share, nine or twelve tends to make more sense.

3. Think about who is actually going to eat them

One person receiving twelve cookies sounds generous.

One person receiving twelve cookies while living with three other people means they probably have about six minutes before everyone notices the box.

For an individual or couple, six cookies is usually plenty.

For a family, office or shared household, I would go larger.

This is also where mixed boxes become useful. If several people are sharing, buying twelve of one flavour can be quite a gamble.

A little variety keeps everybody happier.

4. Check dietary requirements properly

This is the part where guessing is a bad idea.

If someone is vegan, avoids wheat or has an allergy, check the individual product information before ordering.

Do not assume a flavour is suitable because it sounds as though it should be.

We produce plant-based and wheat-free flavours at Happy Crumb, including some seasonal cookies, but the available range changes.

For allergies especially, it is worth contacting the bakery directly if anything is unclear.

A surprise gift should remain a nice surprise.

5. Choose something that feels like a gift when the box opens

Food gifts live or die slightly on the opening moment.

The cookies need to survive delivery, obviously, but they should still feel exciting when the recipient opens the box.

Big cookies help.

A thick NYC-style cookie already feels quite generous compared with a standard biscuit, and seeing several different flavours together makes the box feel more considered.

Then there is the smell.

Opening a box of chocolate cookies has a fairly immediate effect on people.

We have yet to find a sophisticated way of describing it.

So, Is Sending Cookies as a Gift a Good Idea?

If I were choosing for someone and knew very little about what they liked, I would go for a mixed box.

Start with chocolate, add something a little different, and choose the size based on how many people are likely to attack the box once it arrives.

That is genuinely about as complicated as it needs to be.

Happy Crumb cookies are baked in London and delivered across the UK, with classic and seasonal flavours available throughout the year.

If you want to choose the flavours yourself, you can build your own cookie box and send it directly to the recipient.
